A PORTRAIT SHOW BY JOSHUA CANTY
I find this duality of heroism and defeat to be particularly ever-present within the Judges of Israel. God ordained these individuals as conduits to redeem His people, yet they were in need of that very redemption themselves. The accounts of the Judges show us only fragments: small windows into their narratives, which articulate their fallenness and reflect on their need for redemption. These moments allow us to enter into the picture, inserting our own lives in place of the Judges, regarding their brokenness as ours, and sharing in that experience, for we too are called to redeem as well as be redeemed. We too have been appointed.
